Bauxite Residue, a.k.a. Red Mud, is a byproduct residue of the alumina industry. More than 2.5 parts of red mud are produced for every part of aluminum. This means that over 150 million tonnes are produced each year, and left unused in giant pits.&#38;nbsp;

This project explores the use of bauxite residue as a ceramic material, reimagines red mud as a resource rather than waste. Through a combination of scientific research and traditional craft techniques, a range of ceramic vessels was developed. The material’s high oxide content was also used to create a number of glazes. The work challenges perceptions of industrial byproducts, highlighting their untapped possibilities and potential beauty.

Aluminium is not mined in its familiar metallic form. Rather surprisingly, its origins begin in a red stone, called bauxite. From this red ore, a white powder, ‘alumina’, is extracted, and then smelted into the metal we all know and interact with each day, including the very device you are reading this from. This transformation of aluminium involves a global mechanism and system of extraction that operates at colossal scales and yet is nearly invisible to the everyday eye of its consumers. It is a system of extraction that exists to meet the demands of today. It is also vital to our future, given its recyclability, strength and lightweight nature. Often, this is at the cost of the locals from which it is mined. Ore is mined in countries like China, Brazil, Australia, Guinea and Jamaica, and shipped to refineries in the developed world, dissociating the final product from its material origins.
In the process of refining alumina, a red residue is left behind as a marker of these origins – a trace of the journey it has taken and a stark reminder of the costs, be it social, economic or environmental. This is red mud.Red mud is presently left in hazardous landfills around the world, so large they can be seen from space. The global stockpile of red mud in these landfills exceeds 4 billion metric tonnes, growing by 150 million tonnes each year as our demands for aluminium continue to rise.

	While red mud has been extensively researched ever since the invention of the ‘Bayer Process’ (the process by which alumina is extracted), today only 3% is being used globally, despite multitudes of proven methods of valorization. The barriers to its reuse are manifold, but are heavily weighted by economics and legislation, both of which are intimately tied to public perception. In short, nobody wants a hazardous waste, and without this demand, there is little incentive or pressure to change.
Red mud has a bad rep, and for good reason. Depending on the source of the ore, red mud can contain heavy metals and radioactive elements. If the red mud is not properly treated, it can be highly alkaline. And even worse, if the waste site is incorrectly managed, it can lead to disasters such as the 2010 spill in Ajka, Hungary.

&#60;img width="1200" height="811" width_o="1200" height_o="811" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/ba9ef6acf3dac38f1731fdb1325c094bc218ba1cb874852653b4c5dc2b0c1f3e/main_1200.jpg" data-mid="225930148" border="0" alt="2010 red mud spill, Ajka, Hungary." data-caption="2010 red mud spill, Ajka, Hungary." src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/ba9ef6acf3dac38f1731fdb1325c094bc218ba1cb874852653b4c5dc2b0c1f3e/main_1200.jpg" /&#62;

	 But the problems faced by red mud are not immutable. Scientists have shown us that there are feasible solutions.
While it makes for an easy story to blame mining companies, they too are eagerly looking for solutions, so long as they are economically viable; in other words, if there is demand. Without a pull, there will be no push. So what is needed to shift the tide?

“Red mud has no narrative, other than that of waste. How can we show a different side to this stigmatized material? Can it be seen as refined, delicate, and even beautiful?”

Bricks have been made with red mud by scientists nearly five decades ago, and perhaps even earlier by grassroot efforts in regions like India. The composition of red mud is primarily common elements found in the ground: silica, iron, alumina, calcium. This , combined with the fine partical size, lends the material to being ‘sintered’, or fired into a ceramic body. As much as bricks may seem reasonable, high-volume and low-value uses of red mud are difficult to implement in an economically viable way. This is mainly due to the high costs of waste processing, the new legislative hurdles, and the geographic location of most factories (these factories are usually remote, and transporting bricks is energy and cost intensive). How can we as designers contribute – changing the perceived value of this material? Investigating the use of red mud in traditional ceramics, we aim to bring a new aesthetic to an otherwise unwanted resource. The fragility, finesse and natural touch of ceramics run in direct opposition to the brute and constructed nature of industry. It is precisely because of this that we made ceramics; to both draw attention to the industrial model behind our everyday materials, and to suggest an optimistic alternative.

“The ‘Red Mud’ project represents a combination of traditional ceramics with scientific inquiry, a blend of craft and research, trial and error.”

Through traditional ceramics methods, we designed and produced a limited collection of tableware pieces, where both the body and the glaze are made from red mud. The ceramics method, combined with the right additions, neutralizes the red mud and renders it safe and useable.

The ‘Red Mud’ project began in our studies at the Royal College of Art, in London, in 2019. However, the investigation of this material continues to evolve, and we continue to work on new collections, private commissions, collaborations with architects, continued projects with scientists, and consultation for R&#38;amp;D teams of various mining companies.

&#60;img width="6115" height="4077" width_o="6115" height_o="4077" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/eedf27ff4ee0abdd8b406d6ad8974a73aad72b52f7027e1894ccb92fa1859207/ThusThat_OneSideSawn_OnSite-.jpg" data-mid="225930319" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/eedf27ff4ee0abdd8b406d6ad8974a73aad72b52f7027e1894ccb92fa1859207/ThusThat_OneSideSawn_OnSite-.jpg" /&#62;

In the early stages of aluminium production, factories cast molten aluminium into massive blocks weighing in at over 26 tonnes. These blocks are clad with undulating, organic textures that are a result of the casting process.
In the preparation of the blocks to be sent to other factories, the sides are cut off, leaving behind thin rough plates –known as “crusts”.&#38;nbsp;All pieces in this collection are cut from
a single sheet crust, in such a way that
every piece, every offcut, is used.

&#60;img width="8700" height="5803" width_o="8700" height_o="5803" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f15f2fb4c26ef80c9e2873d5cc258e6991f9c4ea8d9e5c0e2cff6a9e36a7d090/BIKAR_Gusshaus_4.jpg" data-mid="225930344" border="0" alt="image: BIKAR Metals" data-caption="image: BIKAR Metals" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f15f2fb4c26ef80c9e2873d5cc258e6991f9c4ea8d9e5c0e2cff6a9e36a7d090/BIKAR_Gusshaus_4.jpg" /&#62;

	 The design of the collection resulted from our own challenges when cutting the
material in such a way that minimized the leftovers. We wondered if it would be possible to
utilize the same principle of reusing offcuts in the designs themselves, whereby the cut of
one object informed the next object’s form, and ultimately the entirety of a sheet is used.
The result is a large adhoc puzzle of jagged cuts and an unusual composition of pieces that
echo the brute and raw production of aluminium, a metal we take for granted as pristine. The pieces are designed to be easily
packed, assembled, disassembled, and recycled.

We hope to see Crust not only as objects but also in a number of architectural and interior projects. We can supply the material in sheets of various thicknesses and up to six meters long.&#38;nbsp;

"After Fire" is an ongoing, research project that explores humanity's complex relationship with fire throughout history and in today's context of climate change and resource scarcity. Historically, fire has been a tool for human prosperity, enabling survival, regeneration, and transformation. However, our relationship with fire has become problematic as we burn vast amounts of fuel, inevitably releasing carbon in the process. Nonetheless biomass counts as ‘renewable energy’.  "After Fire" aims to trace the material narratives of different fuel sources and navigate the nuances and challenges associated with the use of fire in a contemporary context. In this first stage of the project, we gave particular focus to the fuels used, and the aftermath of their incineration: the ash.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>THIS IS COPPER

 Copper is ubiquitous to our modern world, yet it is largely invisible. It is the first metal used by humankind, and it is crucial for a renewable future: a wind turbine alone can contain up to five tonnes of copper, and ten tonnes of the metal are needed per kilometre of high-speed railway. But what exactly is copper? The metal we know is only part of a much wider material story. Mining overburden, tailings, metal concentrates, rare metals like gold and silver, sulfuric acid, sulphate solution, slag, and more. Our primary focus in this investigation is slag, a byproduct of producing copper. Slag is the molten impurities cast aside during the smelting process into large mountainous heaps. Slag is an inevitability of most metal production. The by-product is produced both during extraction directly from ore as well as recycling of scrap metal. Slag is also the reminder of an imperfect process, a residue left behind as a manmade stone. Remains of slag exist from ancient times speaking of long lost civilizations, and will remain far into the future to speak of our own.

&#60;img width="5203" height="7800" width_o="5203" height_o="7800" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/630c174290d33ba2c470c49d4e32b31468e160de01ec08ffa3f7672166d02d97/_G6A0436-4.jpg" data-mid="225930787" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/630c174290d33ba2c470c49d4e32b31468e160de01ec08ffa3f7672166d02d97/_G6A0436-4.jpg" /&#62;
This ongoing project explores the transformative potential of slag as a low-CO2 cementitious binder, replacing traditional Portland cement. The high-temperature smelting process that slag undergoes during copper production creates unique material properties that allow it to be transformed into a binder for new building materials.

 As our research progresses, we continue to uncover new aesthetic and practical possibilities, challenging traditional perceptions of sustainable materials. The resulting concrete combines structural integrity with distinctive surface qualities that reflect slag’s industrial origins.

At its core, this project aims to address two critical challenges: waste management and the carbon footprint of the built environment. By working closely with copper recycling facilities, research institutions, and architects, we are fostering a collaborative effort that extends beyond material development. Our goal is to establish a framework for industrial symbiosis—transforming today’s waste into tomorrow’s resource and redefining the possibilities for sustainable design and construction.

	Developed during our collaboration with the scientists at KU Leuven, and commissioned by Metallo Group, a local copper recycling factory, the first series reflects an exploration of interdisciplinary design methodology alongside an experimental making approach. We were introduced to the breadth of ongoing research, and in response designed and made a collection of pieces that showcases these scientific efforts and communicate alternative pathways towards a circular material culture.

The entire set of objects was exhibited at the copper factory, where members from the construction industry, metallurgy sectors, architects, scientists, and the factory workers were invited to view the waste in altogether new ways.

	Copper is the oldest metal mined by humankind. Earliest traces of its mining appear alongside the first traces of aggriculture. As we learned to feed ourselves, so too did we learn to hunt for metals. Copper is one of the few metals that appears in pure form naturally, called ‘Native copper’. The uses of copper have changed over the centuries. From a prized metal, to finding use in cooking, storage, medicine, boat-building, roofing, and finally, to electricity. Copper has always been prized, and has been quite effectively recycled across time; in fact, about 80% of all copper ever mined is still being circulated. Traditionally, copper was worked by a coppersmith by the power of hammer and fire, into volumous forms such as vessels. Today, that is all but lost. Instead, copper is extruded, spun, and coiled into the base elements that keep our world lit, keep us moving, and keep us connected.Copper today spreads in sineway paths beneath our feet and through our walls, invisible to our everyday eye. And yet, it is crucial to the workings of our society, being key to mobility, communication, and electrification.But the production of copper comes at a heavy cost, socially, economically, and environmentally. While it may have been common to find ore grades in the 20th century of nearly 40% copper purity, today mines are lucky if their ore has 0.2% copper grade. In fact, it is believed that ore quality continues to diminish, and we will soon run out of accessible copper. This decreasing ore quality means entire mountains are exumed to find traces of copper, requiring vast infrastructure and energy, disrupting local environments and peoples, and leaving ever-growing amounts of waste behind.Slag is one such waste.

	Slag is the byproduct of the smelting process of copper. As the feedstock is melted, impurities are cast aside in a molten lava-like material. As it cools, a glassy black rock or sand is left behind. This is slag.Slag is cast aside into mountainous heaps, standing in silhouettes against the sky. Today, these heaps continue to emerge and grow alongside their predecessors from the industrial era of the 19th century, a stark reminder of how methods of extraction, production and consumption have changed little across time.
Copper slag in particular has had little to no viable re-use strategies. This is primarily a result of contamination of slag and economics. Slags can be effectively cleaned from heavy metals, but costs to do so are high. Without a high-value demand, the lack of economic incentive to clean the slag curbs any attempts at reusing it.However, as a result of public and legislative pressure, and a growing demand for alternative and secondary materials, some companies are investing in system to ensure their slag can be used in future settings. We work with some of these companies, and collaborate closely with scientists, in an effort to demonstrate to possibilities of using slag as an alternative building material. It is our hope that this drives more demand to fuel further interest from industry stakeholders.

One-Side-Sawn
 Collection
Description:

In the early stages of aluminium production, factories cast molten aluminium into massive blocks weighing in at over 25 tonnes. These blocks are clad with undulating, organic textures that are a result of the casting process.
In the preparation of the blocks to be sent to other factories, the sides are cut off, leaving behind thin plates with organic rough surfaces–known as “crusts”.
This series reflects the unexpectedly raw backstory to an everyday material. The edges are jagged and roughly cut, resulting in rugged forms that seem to have been themselves byproducts of some industrial mechanisms. The backside of the plates still show traces of the giant saws of the factories from which they were cut.
The pieces are designed to be easily disassembled, and recycled.&#38;nbsp;All pieces are cut from a single sheet of salvaged aluminium sourced from a smelter, in such a way that every piece, every offcut, is used.
